Principal Choir

Sundays rehearsals 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Kids with little or no vocal training are invited to join our Principal Choir. The choir is open to kids 8 and up and sings all the major concerts during the season. Choristers must be strong readers to be ready for the choir.

What to expect…

Rehearsals are bilingual and kids are encouraged to speak in their language of choice. In this choir we put a lot of emphasis on vocal warm ups and correct vocal technique. This includes healthy vocal production, proper body alignment, breathing, mouth shape, diction and resonance. Older kids also learn to be leaders in the choir by helping the younger choristers follow their scores and by leading their vocal part.

In this choir, kids learn to read music, find their part within the score, understand dynamic markings and read in multiple languages. They also learn to follow the conductor, sing in parts, and perform as a group.

In this group we are working on developing confident performers and leaders. We generally sing in 2 parts and work on a variety of repertoire so kids learn how to perform many different styles of music, in many different languages. They perform at both fall and spring concerts and are sometimes invited to other performances in the community.

Chamber Choir

Sunday rehearsals 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

The Chamber Choir is for experienced musicians in grade 7 and up.

Chamber Choir members sing the major concerts of the season with the Principal Choir but may also perform independently.

What to expect…

Rehearsals are bilingual and kids are encouraged to speak in their language of choice. This choir moves quickly. They perform difficult music in a wide variety of styles and languages. They sing in 2, 3 and 4 parts and every member is encouraged to sing solos appropriate to their level. In this group we are developing performance artists. We focus on developing proper singing technique and using music theory to develop sight-singing skills. We work on healthy vocal production, proper body alignment, breathing, mouth shape, diction and resonance. We focus on musical literacy including how to read a score, paying attention to rhythm, dynamics, and musical lines. We also work on learning to perform expressively and to have fun on stage. We sing a variety of repertoire and learn how to perform many different styles of music, in many different languages.
